US Mint Launches Mt. Rushmore Quarter

Some 2000 fill the National Guard Armory in Custer, SD to witness the launch of Mt. Rushmore Quarter.

Custer South Dakota was the site of the launch of the Mount Rushmore quarter. Custer Chamber of Commerce Executive Director David Ressler introduced United States Mint Acting Associate Director of Manufacturing David Croft and Mount Rushmore National Memorial Superintendent Cheryl A Schreier. Local schools as well as Donald "Nick" Clifford and his wife Carolyn were recognized during the program. Mr. Clifford, at age 92, is the last worker who worked directly on the sculpture.

Students in the audience received some of the first quarters at the end of the program.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial quarter is the 20th coin the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, a 12-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites authorized by Public Law 110-456. Each year, the public will see five new national sites depicted on the reverse (tails side) of the America the Beautiful Quarters. The United States Mint is issuing these quarters in the order in which the honored site was first established as a national site.
