Mount Rushmore CompletedMount Rushmore Completed

Officially declared completed October 31, 1941

When you begin to recognize the faces of South Dakota it's obvious that Mount Rushmore has to top the list.

Gutzon Borglum (and we'll add him to the faces of South Dakota) chose George Washington, 1st president of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson, 3rd US President, Theodore "Teddy" "T.R." Roosevelt, 26th U.S. President, and Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States to be carved in granite on Mount Rushmore. Rushmore has become known as the Shrine of Democracy and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.

Some 400 workers contributed to carving of Mount Rushmore.
