An Evening with Harry S. Truman at Mount Rushmore National Monument - October 1, 2011

Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884 and on April 12, 1945, he became the 33rd President of The United States. In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, hopefully established to preserve peace. This was but one of the several events and stories that The President shared with those in attendance this evening. He spoke of his meeting Bill Moyers, Lyndon Johnson’s press secretary, his relationship with his mother-in-law, Madge Gates Wallace, and of course his wife Bess. As President Truman spoke, the lights directed at the famous monument of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln made for a spectacular backdrop.

The Mount Rushmore Society is a nonprofit organization since 1930. It is dedicated to raising funds for the preservation, development and enhancement of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The proceeds from this evening’s event will go toward the design and construction of a shelter for the Kid’s Exploration Area.
